Chapter One A Boy from Baltistan Long before Mountain Travels Pakistan was established, a young boy growing up in Baltistan was surrounded by some of the highest mountains on Earth. The Karakoram was not merely a destination; it was home. The glaciers, rivers, valleys, and mountain communities of Baltistan shaped his understanding of nature, resilience, hospitality, and adventure. These early experiences would later inspire a lifetime dedicated to travel and tourism.
Chapter Two Discovering a Calling After graduating from Government College Rawalpindi, Ghulam Ahmad joined the Civil Service in 1975. His role provided opportunities to meet visitors from many countries and cultures. Through these interactions, he observed something remarkable: Visitors arrived with curiosity about Pakistan but often left with a much deeper appreciation for its people, landscapes, and traditions. He began to recognize tourism as something far more meaningful than travel. It was a bridge between cultures. A means of creating understanding. A way of building friendships that crossed borders. By the early 1980s, he had found his true calling and committed himself fully to the tourism sector.
Chapter Three Building Mountain Travels Pakistan Adventure tourism in Pakistan was still in its formative years. The Karakoram, Himalaya, and Hindukush possessed extraordinary potential, yet few professional organizations existed to help international travelers safely experience these regions. Recognizing the immense potential of Pakistan's mountain regions and the historic Silk Route corridor, Ghulam Ahmad founded Mountain Travels Pakistan with a broader vision: to create meaningful travel experiences that would connect visitors not only with the landscapes of Pakistan but also with the rich cultural heritage of Central Asia and the ancient routes that linked civilizations for centuries. His goal was to combine local expertise, international standards, professional logistics, and genuine hospitality into one trusted organization serving adventurers, mountaineers, cultural travelers, researchers, photographers, documentary teams, and explorers of the Silk Route. What began as a small venture soon grew into a respected travel company serving trekkers, mountaineers, photographers, researchers, educational institutions, diplomats, documentary teams, and cultural explorers from around the world.
Chapter Four Opening Pakistan to the World Over the years, Mountain Travels Pakistan expanded beyond traditional trekking and expedition operations to offer journeys throughout Pakistan, the Silk Route, and selected regions of Central Asia. Many of these historic routes passed through the mountains and valleys that are now among our most popular travel destinations. Mountain Travels Pakistan has long been committed to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of these ancient pathways through carefully designed journeys that combine history, culture, archaeology, local traditions, and breathtaking landscapes. From the ancient crossroads of Gilgit-Baltistan to the high mountain passes leading toward Central Asia, our Silk Route programs allow travelers to follow the footsteps of traders, explorers, and adventurers who shaped the history of the region. These journeys offer far more than sightseeing—they provide a deeper understanding of the peoples, cultures, and civilizations that have connected Asia for thousands of years.
Chapter Six Courage Under Extraordinary Circumstances One of the most difficult moments in our history occurred in 1991. While leading an innovative kayaking expedition on the Indus River with three Japanese nationals, Ghulam Ahmad and the team were kidnapped in southern Pakistan. The ordeal lasted nearly a month. Despite the uncertainty and danger, he remained focused on protecting and supporting the members of the expedition. His courage, leadership, and determination earned formal appreciation from the Japanese Embassy. The Japanese participants later expressed that they believed they owed their lives to his actions during the crisis. The experience tested his resilience but never diminished his belief in tourism as a force for understanding and friendship. Instead, it strengthened it.
Chapter Seven A Global Ambassador for Tourism Throughout his career, Ghulam Ahmad has promoted a simple philosophy: Tourism should bring people together. It should create understanding where there is misunderstanding. It should build friendships where there are borders. This philosophy led him to participate in international tourism forums, including speaking at the Annual Convention on Adventure Tourism in New Delhi, India, in 2004. His message continues to guide our company today. Travel is not merely about visiting places. It is about connecting people.
